Dreams Do Come True

Description

This is a really old piece of mine, from back in high school days. All of the drawings in my sketch pad are dated September, October 2008 or later. So I'm assuming that I made this more or less around November '08.
What I am sure of is what circumstances I was in when I was drawing this.

Do any of you have those particular moments where your drawing skills suddenly go up ten levels and you just can't stop drawing until you finish the piece? This was a result of one of those moments.

I started sketching this in the evening, after eating dinner. Parents weren't home, and I didn't particularly want to spend my lazy time watching TV. I just felt inspired to draw. Something was pulling me toward the desk in my room, I took out my sketch pad and started drawing.
Guidelines first, then sketching in rough details- clothes and hair. The room suddenly went dark- I realized that the power was out.

It didn't stop me at all.

I had to finish it.

I kept a few candles and a box of matches on my bookshelf because blackouts were pretty frequent at that time. So I lit a candle.
As I was trying to get some wax on a glass bottle to stick the candle on, some of it dropped onto the paper- which explains that splotch.
I was just glad it didn't get on the drawing itself.

I kept on going, even when my vision was starting to get blurry from working in the dim light of that one candle.

I didn't stop, even when I noticed the flame on the wick start bending and twisting weirdly. I glanced at the window- seeing it closed, the hair on my neck began to stand on end when I took note of the lack of any feeling or sound of wind or any breeze that should have been brushing against my cheek to get to the candle on my desk.

I kept going for a few moments, until I heard my brothers snicker from behind me. They had been the ones to sneak into my room to try and blow out the candle.

I guess I was much to deep in my work that I didn't notice them standing right behind my chair.

I yelled at them, and they left me alone to my work.

I sat at that desk drawing by the light of the candle for over three hours.
And when I straightened my back- it hurt like HELL!

I don't know what took me so long to sketch something so simple. But when I compare this sketch to the others in my sketch pad. This one is obviously on a different skill level (during that time, anyway).

I never did darken it or ink the lines, because that was the stage when I seemed to mess up any drawing that I tried to finalize with ink or color. Despite its sketchy, faded appearance, this drawing is quite dear to me because it is the first drawing I had done to express my feelings for someone without trying to hide their identity.

So yes, the guy here does resemble someone special to me in real life.
That's why the words underneath the sketch say "Dreams DO come true!" :meow:

My first ever drawing referring to that same person would have to be this one [link]
